These early Midgets are really beginning to become desirable. This Tartan Red example is no exception and would prove to be an excellent investment for the future, and offers much opportunity for improvement to add further to its value. Being a Mk2 it benefits from having wind-up side windows, a removable hood, outside door handles, along with other features that the earlier cars didn't have!

The car is an ‘older’ restoration – I have two big folders of history for the car dating back to the late 1980s, when, presumably, the car had its full structural and body restoration. Since then it has covered a relatively low mileage, and, judging by the underside, has never been out in the wet since then!

The car comes with a full 12 months MOT, and is ready to drive away. I recently completed a 100-mile drive in the car without issue. The 1275cc engine starts, and the car runs and drives very well indeed. The engine has excellent oil pressure and does not overheat. There are no nasty clunks from the transmission and no whine from the differential. Recent works include new brake calipers, a full service and tune-up. 

The interior is very clean and tidy, having been fitted with new leather seat covers, new door cards and good carpets. The hood appears to have never been used and the removable hood frame has been powder-coated and is in fantastic order.

Bodily, the car appears to be pretty solid and is very presentable – however, it’s probably 25 years since it was last painted so there are some imperfections here and there. The wing-top seams are nice and solid, as are all of the wheelarches, along with the wing and door-bottoms. It could quite happily be used as it is – as you can see, it looks very presentable but there are marks and scratches around and about the car so please do not come expecting a show car. If you wanted perfection you would probably have to budget for a respray – but there would be very little prep to do before painting, and would make the car worth a great deal more.

Structurally, the car appears to be very solid indeed – the floors, sills and spring hangers all look good. I can’t see there being any welding issues for a good few years to come. Most of the suspension components have been powder-coated and the car hasn’t been undersealed to death, so is not hiding any horrors!

All in all, this is a great opportunity for someone who wants a well-sorted car that can be used regularly without any worries. Don’t let the slight cosmetic issues put you off. It’s not the usual tarted-up piece of junk – the work which has been carried out appears to have been done to a good standard.
