1994 Rover Mini Cooper Spi

Well, where do I start? This lovely little 1994 Mini Cooper 1.3i has an MOT until May 2016 (no advisories) and has covered just 47,000 miles from new. It has clearly been very well cared for throughout its life, and it really does show. It’s the straightest, most unmolested 1990s Cooper that I’ve seen for a long while, and it’s lovely to drive.

It still has original floors and sills, and I can’t see that the car has had any welding anywhere, other than a new rear valence at some stage. It’s completely solid and in fantastic order!

I have history with the car which includes MOTs from new, and some recent bills for work, which includes all new brakes and a brand new set of tyres. These non-Sportspack SPi cars actually handle better than the Sportspack ones, as there is much less unsprung weight with these narrower wheels and tyres – and they ride much more nicely too! They are much more of a ‘genuine’ Cooper, in my eyes, and with the way values are going – a fantastic investment.


Bodily, the car is excellent. It has been repainted as the lacquer was starting to peel in some areas. This has been done to a very high standard, as you can see from the pictures. All new window rubbers etc have been fitted, and the car does not leak in. Door bottoms are both nice and solid (original door skins, too!). The wings are all solid behind the arches, and the roof gutters are all in great shape.

The Minilite style alloys are in great shape and the tyres are nearly new, as mentioned already. The car stops in a straight line, and pulls well. The engine sounds very sweet indeed, and the gearbox selects all gears nicely, without any crunches, and doesn’t jump out of gear either, like most Minis seem to! The interior is very clean indeed – the seats are in super condition, as are the carpets and dashboard.

This is a bargain price for a fantastic car which attracts a great deal of attention wherever it goes. Obviously it’s not a concourse show car but it’s one of the nicest I’ve seen in a good while, and is ready to use and enjoy. You must remember that running a Mini isn’t like a modern Japanese Honda or equivalent – there will be bits and bobs to do from time to time, but generally you’ll be able to fix it yourself, because they’re so simple!
